What is a more sound decision in this economy: Wedding planner or photographer?

What kind of education would I need to become a wedding planner?
Should I really get a bachelor’s degree in photography, if that is the path I decide, or should I go the self-educated route?

What ever you do, go for it full force. If you have a back up plan, you will fall back on that back up plan and never realize your dreams. Many successful people go for what they want to do, because they don’t want to be busboys or sales clerks.

You don’t need a bachelor’s degree in photography to become one. You should probably go to a 2 year art institute. Then, you should become an assistant to a photographer to get some experience and contacts.

You can learn either by working under an expert in your area. What you need a degree in is marketing or business so that you will be able to market and manage your business well and beat the competition.

these aren’t really the jobs you should just chose based on which one is better financially. to be successful at either you need to have a passion for it.
photography is an art. if you don’t have the eye for it, no amount of classes can make you great.
and wedding planning is completely different. you need to have FANTASTIC organisational skills, and be creative with ideas to present to the bride.
think about if you fit either of these profiles, then decide on a career.

A more sound decision if your focused on getting a job that’s high in demand and getting paid on a regular basis is a wedding planner. In the United States, people get phat paid to that, and not only that, we have one of the highest rates of marriage. So I would stick with that. I’m not sure if you would need a degree to become a wedding planner or what type of education you would need for that. And if you did become a wedding planner, you could still do photography on the side, and do something bigger with it later. And maybe, that would become your full-time focus later in life. Good luck with everything, stay positive, and whatever you decide to do, be passionate with it!

You can plan your own wedding but you can’t take your own pictures. These are your memories and you want them done right so if you must choose pick the photographer. Most people are gonna want the pictures so if you are looking for a tip towards a career, be a photographer.

In a bad economy, people cut back on luxuries. Can you do a wedding without a wedding planner? Why pay for something you can do yourself?
I think photographer is a little more versatile. There are more events than just weddings that people can use photographers for.
But, here’s the thing, how long until you become employable? By then, the economy may have recovered and everyone’s back to using planners.

My gut is that what you need is a gig. Once you get someone who wants your service as a wedding planner, either hire a photographer or get in the way of a camera. After that it’s word of mouth and advertising. If there is some formal educational route to that field I would be surprised.

I am a Florist and do Weddings all the time…I have been in the business for years. With all of my experience…I recommend being a photographer. The Wedding Coordinators I know are struggling. The key is to develop a style all your own, you need a portfolio of great pictures in order to sell your services to Brides. I don’ t think you need a bachelors degree in photography…just educate yourself on how to capture beautiful shots. I know that many Brides feel that pictures are very important because they last forever and a Wedding Planner they can do without.

Don’t allow such a personal decision to be determined by “the economy.”
There will be bad economies and good economies during your career regardless if you are a wedding planner or photographer or something else.
What matters is where your heart is, not what the evening news says about the economy.
Education for either of these careers will help but it isn’t as critical as hands-on experience.

Ask yourself the question: do you plan on doing either job for more than a year? If the answer is “yes” why are you basing your decision on an economic situation that will last MAYBE 18 more months? To do either job you need to be able to see beyond the nose on your face and it doesn’t appear you are able to do that.
However, if you want to be a photographer you should definitely have an education.
