How long do extra marital affairs usually last? If it last for years is it because of love or convenience?

So my estranged husband had and affair which caused him to move out of our home. When affair was discovered 2years ago he stopped having sex with me. He is still seeing his long time mistress. He says he is happy for now and left the decision of divorce up to me. If he won’t divorce me that must mean he doesn’t want to and there is still a chance of reconcile. Is he still with this woman for convenience or love? Can anyone say how long affairs usually last?
Once the kids start school, do affairs become more common?

However, it’s rare that you see a follow up as to what happened.

Does anyone else think that Maybe, Just Maybe the person having the “emotional affair” is Actually Screwing the person they are having the “emotional affair” with and thinks that their spouse will never figure it out if they call it an “emotional affair”??? If you are going to have one of these types of affairs, that would mean you are just absolutely madly in Love with the person for who they are but won’t sleep with them? Why not?

I filed the divorce but, neither of us did anything about it. Married 15yrs with children. He hasn’t tried to follow through with divorce NOR, has he tried to reconcile our broken marriage OR end relationship with his other woman.
When in doubt about what to do – Is doing nothing and waiting this out a good idea? I have not come to terms of wanting to divorce my husband.

Honest answers, not smart-a** ones. If you have had one or been dealing with a spouse that had one. How do you get the trust back. Is spyware on their computer necessary? I’ve heard about these emotional affairs that people have where a man and a woman become close to one another emotionally and share things that they wouldn’t with just friends.
